When the news flash first came across my screen that Jeronimo Yanez, another racist, neo nazi cop, had been found not guilty by a jury for the murder of Philando Castile, I was not surprised at all. Matter fact when they said the trial was starting in the case I already expected the outcome to be like this. I have no reason to watch these trials and can honestly say that I never have because it’s not hard to do the math. Cop = Not Guilty. People have been brainwashed into believing that anything cops say is the truth, and white people in particular have a code that says a black mans life is worth nothing and therefore when a cop kills a black man then the cop should walk. That’s how the deck is stacked and it’s been stacked like that for a long time in this country.
So I knew the outcome of the verdict without having to play games with myself. I also knew that there would be marching in the street, crying, screaming and possible arrests of protesters and the family talking about forgiveness and warning the protesters to stay calm. Saying things like, “Philando wouldn’t want people tearing things up and doing any type of violence”. Now I was right about the protesting, that did happen and I believe there may have been an arrest or two, I’m not sure about that. The one thing that I got wrong and I’m glad that I got it wrong is the family response. Valerie Castile, the mother of Philando came out swinging and she didn’t hold back any punches. Her words were powerful, profound and the real heartfelt emotional words of a mother who loved her son, knew the struggle that he went through being a black man in this country called the U.S. and was angered by the fact that her sons murderer was walking free while her son was dead and buried.
Ms. Castile put into words the pain of hundreds of black mothers before her who have lost their sons and have been forced to deal with that loss and speak to a group of people that want bloody revenge and now this mother feels like her priority is to quell that and say things that we all get tired of hearing. So Ms. Castile spoke truth to power and she should be applauded for that. She said that the police were going to continue killing our people. Matter fact she said f**k the police and a few more things that were absolutely necessary. She said the things that Black men aren’t saying or doing. Black men aren’t protecting, fighting or being a cushion for our communities to depend on and look to for leadership as well as solutions to problems. It’s sad that a woman had to say what many men are too cowardly to execute. We have become too comfortable and that comfort has given us reason to think that we are not in a war when in essence we are in a war for our very lives everyday in this country. It’s time for us to stand up or just lay down and be the slaves that they want. Right now we’re losing but Ms. Castile hopefully woke up a few more sleeping warriors.
